Youth Leadership Council

Picture
Picture
The Youth Leadership Council is comprised of a group of motivated and ambitious high school students. They set out to do community beautification projects, travel across the country for leadership conferences, and volunteer with other non-profits around Santa Barbara. The meetings are run by the students themselves and are similar to actual city council meetings.

The purpose of our Youth Leadership Council (YLC) is for youth to explore, discuss, and recommend effective ways to engage themselves in the activities of their PAL and their community. Membership in the Youth Leadership Council provides youth with leadership opportunities, education, new relationships and lots of fun as they work with their peers for the betterment of their PAL and their community.

The Youth Leadership Council is open to any local high school student who is committed to community service and personal development. There are academic requirements along with other qualifications to join the council. If you’re interested in attending please contact SBPAL to set up an interview with our Council Adviser.

Our Goals

  • Involve youth in the decision making process relative to policies, programs and activities of their respective PAL and community
  • Educate youth in the democratic process of governing their own Youth Leadership Council
  • Encourage the youth to volunteer in a community service program
  • Improve communication between PAL Staff and youth
  • Provide positive peer role models and a continuous forum to voice concerns
  • Provide methods of reaching out to youth who are wanting to get involved, who are either afraid or don't know how to take the initiative
  • Instill a sense of civic pride and responsibility, develop leadership skills, enhance self-esteem and be a voice in the PAL process.
  • As well as an alternative to juvenile crime

Requirements

  • Maintain a 2.5 minimum Grade Point Average
  • Attending school and no negative contact with any law enforcement agency
