                                  Santa Barbara Police Explorer Post

                                  The Santa Barbara Police Department Explorer Post is a volunteer organization for young adults, age 14 to 21, who have an  interest in a
                                  career in law enforcement. The Explorer Post provides in-depth education in skills such as leadership, interpersonal communication, community relations, command presence, career planning, and more.

                                  The Santa Barbara Police Explorer Post is supervised by Officer Adrian Gutierrez.

                                  Activities

                                  Explorer meetings are held the first and third and Thursday of every month from 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm at the Santa Barbara Police Department.
                                  Attendance at the meetings is mandatory unless approved by an Advisor. In addition to the meetings, Explorer's also work community service events and Police Department events such as:
                                  * Attend weekly meetings

                                  * Officer safety 
                                  * Physical training

                                  Requirements

                                  Once successfully completing the testing process, Explorers must purchase, wear, and maintain an Explorer uniform when working Police Department functions. Explorers are expected to adhere to a high standard of ethical conduct, both in and out of uniform. Explorer membership is a privilege which provides skill for a lifetime and experiences which cannot be equaled by any other youth organization.This is not the type of organization in which each member can casually participate, rather, if you choose to test with the Explorer Post in hopes of being accepted as a member you will be expected to demonstrate that you are willing to adhere to our strict policy of personal conduct and active participation in our program.

                                  Reasons for Denial

                                  1. Currently on Probation or Parole
                                  2. Conviction of any felony
                                  3. Conviction of any sex crime
                                  4. Conviction of misdemeanors will be reviewed for possible disqualification based on the totality of the circumstances.
                                  5. Arrests and / or involvement in crimes without conviction will be reviewed on a case by case basis.
                                  6. Any failure to tell the truth at any point in the selection process.
                                  7. Failure to pass written test
                                  8. Does not meet physical standards based on physical agility test.
                                  9. No present involvement with “gangs” or association with known “gang” members. Past involvement with “gangs” will be evaluated on a case by case basis.
                                  10. Use or possession of an illegal drug or illegal possession of a legal drug within the last year of the testing date will disqualify the applicant. Use and / or possession of certain drugs may disqualify the applicant for life. Failure to disclose any illegal drug use or possession, or illegal possession of a legal drug will immediately disqualify the applicant.
                                  11. Previous illegal alcohol use or possession could disqualify.
                                  12. If applicant has a driver’s license (from any state) any excessive number of infraction violations could disqualify.
                                  13. If applicant is in High School he /she must maintain a 2.0 GPA. If the applicant has a High School Diploma or equivalent certificate he / she must be enrolled in at least one college level course or vocational training and maintain a 2.0 GPA through the achievement of an Associates Degree or equivalent.
                                  14. A bad employment record – This is defined as an employment history which shows the applicant was habitually characterized by any or all of the following: Discourteous, disloyal, indecisive, undependable, uncooperative, insubordinate, lacking in capacity to work, disobedient, poor initiative and judgment, unable to accept responsibility, intemperate, unable to get along with others, unreliable, negative, prejudicial, or undisciplined. This also applies to any history the applicant has with any volunteer organization.
                                  15. No underage smokers
                                  16. No underage parents. Exceptions can be made on a case by case basis, depending on the circumstances.
                                  17. Poor communication skills (Written, oral and/or interpersonal)
                                  18. Under 14 or over 19 years old
                                  19. Any physical, mental, or medical condition which impairs the applicant to the extent that he / she is unable to complete any of the requirements of the position.
                                  20. The Santa Barbara Police Department reserves the right to terminate membership in the Explorer Post at any time for what the Agency determines to be good cause.

                                  Testing Process

                                  Oral Board The oral board consists of a panel of Explorers and Police Officer Advisors who will ask you questions identifying your qualifications for the position.

                                  Background Check
                                  If you successfully complete the entire testing process, the final phase is a background investigation conducted by Police Officer Advisors.

                                  Your parents are welcome to accompany you during the testing process, though they will not be able to sit in on the oral board. If you unsuccessfully complete any portion of the testing we will discuss with you areas for improvement, and you will be welcome to test again within three to six months depending on your overall test score.
                                  For participants under age 18 you must have your parents review and sign the release form that is included in your testing letter, which authorizes your participation in the testing process. Without this release you can not test for the Explorer program. Regardless of your age you must review the “Reasons for Denial” and sign the “Waiver” section. You must bring this signed form with you to the testing process otherwise you will not be aloud to participate in the
                                  tests.
